Deferred deep linking for iOS and Android apps
Teams often validate universal links and still miss post-install routing failures. This guide covers deferred deep linking flow design, common breakpoints, and a release checklist that protects attribution.
Deferred deep linking flow in one view
- User taps campaign link with destination route and tracking parameters.
- If app is installed, open route directly in app.
- If app is not installed, send user to store fallback.
- After first open, resolve deferred route and continue to intended screen.
- Persist campaign metadata for analytics and attribution checks.
What must stay consistent
- Canonical route mapping between web and app destinations.
- Fallback targets that match campaign intent.
- Install-time parameter handoff to first app session.
- Click and open events linked to the same campaign context.
Deep link vs deferred deep link
A regular deep link opens a specific app route when the app is already installed. A deferred deep link adds the not-installed path: the user goes to the App Store or Google Play first, then the app restores the intended destination after first open.
The extra handoff is where most failures happen. Treat route restoration, fallback URLs, and UTM continuity as one release checklist instead of testing only the installed-app path.
High-frequency failure patterns
| Failure pattern | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Store fallback mismatch | Users land on wrong app/store region or stale page. | Version and test fallback URLs per platform and country. |
| Lost parameters post-install | First session opens but attribution fields are empty. | Enforce parameter allowlist and verify redirect chain behavior. |
| Route not restored after install | App opens home instead of intended deep destination. | Pass deferred payload into first-run router and assert target route. |
Release checklist for growth and engineering
- Verify AASA and assetlinks on production domains before campaign launch.
- Test installed-app flow on current iOS/Android versions.
- Test not-installed flow with fresh installs on real devices.
- Capture route outcome and campaign parameters at click and first open.
- Review logs for mismatched destination, missing params, or fallback drift.
